The layout of his walled vegetable garden was based on Lady Salisbury's plan, but now it is teeming with his own ideas. Miram Rothschild inspired him to create the wildflower meadow fringing his drive.

Prince Charles is a traveller and an observer, and he is sure to bring new ideas home with him. Everything has to be done properly, with no corners cut and when evening comes on in winter there is a torch to hand to finish the last tidy up. The holes for shrubs must be dug deep and wide, with a barrow of well-rotted manure standing by to give them a promising start. His enthusiasm is infectious, whether we are planning or planting. Prince Charles makes me feel I am working with him, not for him, incorporating his ideas with mine. I love my visits to Highgrove because I know they will be busy days spent digging in the borders, or discussing some scheme, new or already partly planned. No time need be wasted going to the tool shed. The inner porch at Highgrove is neatly lined with gumboots, baskets, trowels and forks. The original 1911 Country Living cover and feature
